machine translation’s future ll depend less on technology & more on language devpt by technocrat/language technician like linguist & semantic
31 years ago, while working as a translator at an aerospace company, I was told that they were going to buy a piece of software (Systran) that would make our job obsolete. They scrapped the software in less than one month, but said “in 5 years technology will make it possible”. Sure.
Human language is too complex. Things like poetry, or even safety-critical technical texts will never be translated automatically.
